[qype id="1145783"] Yes folks! It’s time for – MOCK THE WEEK! BBC2′s ‘Mock the Week’ (Thursdays at 10pm) often has a sketch where one comedian – usually pretending to be a government spokesman – gives the official viewpoint while a second – usually Hugh Dennis – says what the government actually mean. The host is Dara O’Braian. For the purposes of this item, Andy Parsons, the bald headed one, (or the follicly challenged one if you’re one of those politically correct sorts) is the first comedian. Jerry Green wrote the script: Dara: OK. Your subject tonight is Upper Norwood joint library. Andy Parsons, you’re the Croydon council spokesman reading the council”s press release, Hugh – you have to say what Croydon council actually mean. Andy: “Croydon council has proposed an unprecedented joint approach to making Upper Norwood’s library more efficient as part of its ongoing commitment to reduce public spending.” Hugh: “We want to cut the library’s budget.” Andy: “The council has asked neighbouring Lambeth – which co-funds the library as part of a unique contract between the two boroughs – to work with Croydon to bring costs down at the library.” Hugh: “We want to cut the library’s budget.” [...]

parkrun is a FREE weekly timed 5km event that caters for all ages from beginners to athletes wanting to improve their personal best. After successfully setting up Bromley parkrun, Ashlee Corfe handed over the event to a well trained, confident and friendly team at Bromley. She thought that South London could do with another parkrun and there wasn’t a better place than Crystal Palace Park. “I think that the heritage and the build-up to the Olympics will impact this park and what a time to utilise the space with local runners during this occasion,” commented Ashlee. When the word got out that parkrun was coming to Crystal Palace the e-mails started flooding in saying that clubs, people, etc were so excited and could not wait to have one near them. Since starting, Crystal Palace parkrun took off and within the first month it has averaged 57 people per week. The volunteer team are extremely dedicated with lots of enthusiasm. The feedback from the participants is extremely positive even though people say the course is tough due to some hills but that is what makes it. The good thing about Crystal Palace parkrun is that you can turn the day into [...]

Following the recent success of Motorsport at the Palace, Sevenoaks and District Motor Club are pleased to announce a donation of £3,150 to local charities. St. Christopher’s Hospice and the Royal London Society for the Blind (RLSB) have each received final cheques for £1,575, thanks to the kind donations of competitors and exhibitors at the event. Motorsport at the Palace, sponsored by the Ancaster Group, saw over 5000 spectators converge on Crystal Palace park to enjoy two days of motor sport. Each driver was encouraged to donate to the charitable causes, both of which have strong connections with Sevenoaks and District Motor Club. Martin Chinnery, Chairman of the club, said: “The RLSB has a long and distinguished history in helping blind and partially sighted people to achieve their goals in education, training and employment. Today, they run a specialist nursery school and college from their educational campus in Sevenoaks, and an Adult Support Service from Central London. “St. Christopher’s Hospice is located within yards of Crystal Palace park and has been providing hospice care for over 40 years. Our motor club has supported their cause over many years and we are grateful for the service they provide.”

ProSport Photos A blazing success! It’s been ten years since I competed in the last Crystal Palace triathlon and although my times have not improved much it is still one of the best organised racing events I’ve completed. A totally self-contained racing event in London is very rare these days and it is a joy not to have to worry about traffic, pedestrians or the like and the National Sports Centre’s 50m pool pool provided an excellent ‘baptism’ for those wary of sea and lake swims. Spectator support was excellent both in the pool and on the running/cycling course. Over 500 adult and 150 junior competitors as well as spectators turned up on what was the hottest day of the year. The standards of the race and its competitors keep on rising and this year was no exception, with an increasingly competitive field adding to the excitement and entertainment for everyone who had turned up to cheer on their friends and family. The day started with Club members and marshals arriving at 6am to set up and prepare the course ready for the adult race at 9am, followed by the junior races in the Youth (15-16), TriStar 3 (13-14), TriStar 2 [...]

Visitors and locals are invited to enjoy a full program of entertainment and fun. It’s going to be no small feat to top the last festival at Christmas, but you can be sure it will do. DUBBED ‘THE UNDERGROUND’ FESTIVAL, THE FESTIVAL WILL CELEBRATE THE OPENING OF THE EAST LONDON TUBE LINE LINE ON 23 MAY IN CRYSTAL PALACE, LINKING DALSTON JUNCTION TO WEST CROYDON VIA NEW CROSS AND WHITECHAPEL AND FINALLY PUTTING CRYSTAL PALACE ON THE TUBE LINE FOR THE FIRST TIME.
Crystal Palace’s long-association with the film industry will be marked in high style this summer, with the first Crystal Palace International Film Festival, running from 19-29 July. The festival, brainchild of local producers Neill Roy and Roberta Gallinari from Harlequin Productions, has already attracted some big names, with actor and comedian Johnny Vegas and local comedian and writer Mark Steel signing up as judges. They will be joined by local animation and special effects director Quentin Miles of Cinesite whose many credits include the new Clash of the Titans and the Harry Potter and James Bond series. Neill Roy said that the idea for the festival was less a “lightbulb moment”, rather “a year or more fanning the original flame. I’ve lived here for seven years and loved it from the start. It is a hubub of all kinds of art from music to paint, sculpture and film/TV. There is already a music festival here and live music every week in lots of bars – it just seemed perfect to complete the cycle. Since my company, Harlequin Productions, is local and produce commercials, video and TV we are the logical organisers.” Crystal Palace is no stranger to moving images.
